openBIM Business Value

Background: The Strategic Project Business Value Capture, creating a platform to capture business value and objectively show the benefits of openBIM, was proposed by buildingSMART International in 2024. In 2025, three buildingSMART chapters (Brazil, Portugal, and USA) plus an independent consultancy (Strategic Building Innovation) pledged funding and support to underwrite a portion of the strategic project by developing a framework of prioritized metrics to capture openBIM Business Value and to populate that framework with measured results.
In brief summary: the Phase 1 study revealed a large appetite for quantified openBIM business benefits, specific categories of interest … and unfortunately a lack of reliable data to fill these industry needs. A Phase-2 study is proposed to improve data availability and reliability.
Phase 2 Study
To realize greater potentials uncovered in the Phase-1 study, and scale it for global relevance and impact, the team recommends focusing next steps on building a strong metrics foundation for expansion and repeatable application. Phase-1 study revealed that quantified openBIM metrics are not widely adopted in the industry. Where metrics were available, results from openBIM® and proprietary BIM were rarely separated. Informed by this finding, the Phase-2 study will begin with education relating to benefits and methodologies of quantified metrics. It will include a framework of standardized metrics applicable to a wide variety of projects, stages of lifecycle, and built asset types. We note in particular that teams designing and operating infrastructure were especially interested in metrics that would apply to their classifications of built assets.
This strong and stable foundation of knowledge and widely-applicable metrics framework will improve the availability and quality of metrics collection for Phase-2, including a baseline of performance not enhanced by openBIM, and growing to measure the impact of openBIM adoption.
Moreover, we will have opportunities to engage with other bSI efforts like the Awards, PCert, and Seeing is Believing programs to expand our reach and integrate openBIM value reporting throughout bSI and the industry.

A brief outline follows.
OBJECTIVES:
-
Establish a culture of metrics
-
Develop a common metrics framework repeatable and comparable between organizations and projects
-
Integrate and align value statements throughout bSI efforts
-
Provide webinars and presentations to build metrics skills and understanding
-
Provide workshops to enroll professionals and gather data
-
Provide guidance in collecting comparable metrics across projects, regions, planets, universes, and realities.
-
Identify and employ publication channels
-
Consider high-end data collection mechanism as an add service
-
Consider collaborative or bespoken efforts for special interests
