Integrated Estimating is the newest innovation in the realm of openBIM-based estimating. Is it just a repeat of what we experienced in the late 2000’s? No. Previous iterations of model-based estimating practices have not succeeded at scale for a variety of reasons. Yet, the AEC industry stands to benefit in substantial ways by adopting scalable, robust integrated estimating workflows over simplified and disconnected quantity extraction practices (notice the subtle difference). Adoption will require application of higher-level digital transformation practices, but the value achieved will be of equally higher-level than traditionally experienced. Digital transformation practices require standardization and innovation as a foundation. New efforts to advance openBIM-based workflows are afoot, working to define the standards and methods that will enhance the scalability for teams new to these workflows and teams stuck in older, less valuable practices. The presentation will provide practical examples of projects using the methods described above and the lessons learned from these case studies.
